GFI’s mission centers on quantifying and analyzing illicit financial flows while formulating and promoting policy solutions to curb them. The organization estimates that approximately $1 trillion per year flows illicitly out of developing countries, undermining economic development and exacerbating poverty. GFI’s work has been instrumental in bringing financial transparency issues to the attention of global leaders and institutions.

In 2009, GFI convened a coalition of research and advocacy organizations, along with over 50 governments, to form the Task Force on Financial Integrity and Economic Development. This coalition, later renamed the Financial Transparency Coalition in 2013, advocates for transparency in the global financial system to address inequalities that penalize billions of people worldwide.

Through its research and advocacy efforts, GFI aims to address the harms inflicted by trade misinvoicing, transnational crime, tax evasion, and kleptocracy, contributing to the development of more transparent and equitable financial systems globally.
